6th Executive Committee (2018-2023)

A General Meeting held on 10 January 2018 endorsed the following team in the Executive Committee for two years (2018-2020).  Due to COVID-19 issues, the May 2020 general body meeting and the election procedures for a new executive committee could not take place, leading to a series of extensions of the executive officials’ term until May 2022. A special general body meeting held on 19 May 2022 decided to expand the executive committee and let it function until May 2023. (revised on 25 May 2022: )


President: Er. Dr. Netra Prakash Bhandary (Professor, Ehime University, Japan)

Dr. Bhandary has a bachelor degree in civil engineering from Aligarh Muslim University of India (1993) and a master degree in engineering (major: geotechnical engineering, 2000) and a doctoral degree in engineering (major: geotechnical engineering/Landslides, 2003) from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering of Ehime University, Japan. Working at Ehime University as a full-time faculty member since 2003 April, he is involved in geotechnical engineering research focusing on landslides and ground shaking behavior during earthquakes. As a fresh civil engineer, he worked as a road engineer for a construction company in Nepal for one year, and then he joined Nepal Engineering College as a faculty member and taught various subjects for three years. He is currently a life member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), a regular member of Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS), Japan Landslide Society (JLS), Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ), GIS Association of Japan, and Americal Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and a founder member and secretary of Himalayan Landslide Society. He also represents Ehime University in International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) and International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ISGdR).

Vice President: Er. Dr. Indra Prasad Acharya (Associate Professor, Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University)

Dr. Acharya has a bachelor degree in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, 2000), a master degree in civil engineering with specialization in geotechnical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India (2009), and a PhD with specialization in geotechnical engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India (2015). Currently working at Pulchowk Campus of Institute of Engineering (Tribhuvan University) as a full-time faculty member (since 2003), he teaches soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering topics to undergraduate as well as graduate students and is also involved in research work in the field of geotechnical engineering and geohazards. He has a long experience in engineering consulting work and training programs for practicing engineers. He is a life member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), a general member of Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) and Nepal Geotechnical Society NGS), and a registered engineer of Nepal Engineering Council (NEC).

General Secretary: Er. Mandip Subedi (Principal, Universal Engineering & Science College, Lalitpur)

Er. Subedi has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus). He has a brief experience of working with the government institution as a project engineer before he entered the academic sector as the founder principal of Universal Engineering and Science College Engineering & Science College, a privately run engineering institution under curriculum management and affiliation with Pokhara University. He is currently a PhD candidate of engineering (majoring in geotechnical engineering) at Tribhuvan University Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, working under Dr. Indra Prasad Acharya’s research supervision. Joint Secretary (2018.1-2022.5): Er. Chandra Dev Bhatt (Engineer, Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads, Nepal)

Er. Bhatt has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (2005) and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus). After a brief teaching experience at Kathmandu Engineering College, he has joined the government service as an engineer at the Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads (DoLIDAR) under the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration of Nepal. Also a member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), he is one of the young and active members of Nepal Geotechnical Society.


Treasurer (2018.1-2022.5): Er. Him Jyoti Thapa (Deputy Manager, Aerodrome Engineering Department, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal)

Er. Thapa has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus). Currently, he is working with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, a government agency that looks after all civil aviation matters including airport and airfield development and management in the country, as Deputy Mánager of Aerodrome Engineering Department. Before that, he was involved with the Roads Board Nepal, another government institution, as an engineer. He also has teaching experience as a lecturer in Kathmandu Engineering College for a short period and as a junior professor at Nepal Engineering College for a few years beginning January 2008. He has been serving Nepal Geotechnical Society for nearly eight years remaining in the executive committee. A member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA) and Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS), he is recently more with professional and engineering activities.

1. Er. Govinda Prasad Niroula (Kathford International College of Engineering and Management) (2018.1-2022.5)

Er. Niroula has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (2014) from Advanced College of Engineering and Management (a TU affiliate) and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering (2017) from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus). He is currently a lecturer at Kathford International College of Engineering and Management and teaches soil mechanics and foundation engineering including laboratory testing methods to undergraduate students. He also has professional experience working In the field of geotechnical investigation, railway track design, power transmission line design, etc. He is a member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), Nepal Geotechnical Society, and also a registered engineer of Nepal Engineering Council (NEC).

2. Er. Keshab Sharma (Research Assistant, PhD Candidate, University of Alberta, Canada)

Er. Sharma has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus), Nepal, and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan as an ADB scholar. He has recently obtained a PhD in Engineering from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Alberta. While as a PhD candidate he was also involved in teaching and conducting research in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. His research interests include rocking shallow foundation, soil-structure interaction, geo-disaster, and earthquake reconnaissance studies. In his PhD research, he worked on developing an innovative design method for the shallow foundation in earthquake-prone zones. Out of his research work, he has published dozens of papers in national and international journals and has also presented more than 15 papers in various international conferences. He also writes on socio-technical issues as a columnist in Nepal’s national dailies.

He has an experience of teaching at Kathmandu Engineering College (KEC) and Institute of Engineering, and as an engineer, he served the Government of Nepal for a few months and worked as a project engineer at Save the Children International focusing in the multi-hazard assessment of school buildings and design of retrofit measures in eastern Nepal. He is currently a general member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS), Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS), Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association, and a student member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

3. Er. Sanjaya Kumar Jain (Managing Director, G. M. Consortium, a group of companies)

Er. Jain has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, 2004) and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Lawrence Tech University of USA (2009). He is currently a PhD candidate at Lincoln University of Malaysia and is doing research on bearing capacity enhancement using geo-grid. An employee of G. S. Soil and Materials Engineers (P) Ltd, Kathmandu, Nepal, he has 5 years of professional experience in the field of civil engineering. He also has experience of serving as a laboratory assistant while doing master in engineering at Lawrence Tech University in the USA. He has also undertaken various responsibilities in geotechnical design and analysis, such as pile design, pile construction, soil investigation, lab tests, soil anchoring, slope stability analysis, and so on. He is a member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA) and a registered engineer of Nepal Engineering Council (NEC).

4. Er. Shiva Nepal (Deputy Director General, Department of Roads, Nepal)

Er. Shiva Nepal has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering awarded by Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, India in 1989. He started his engineering career as a government officer at the Department of Roads of the Government of Nepal, and at present he is serving the department as one of the Deputy Director Generals and is associated with geotechnical engineering issues in road building and maintenance in Nepal for several years. Er. Nepal plays a role in bridging Nepal Geotechnical Society with government plans and policies.

5. Er. Uday Raj Neupane (Managing Director, Geotechnical Engineering)
Er. Neupane has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Advanced College of Engineering and Management (affiliated with Tribhuwan University) and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Before joining the master’s degree program, he worked in high rise building and bridge construction projects as a site engineer and project manager. He also has a short experience of teaching undergraduate students at Institute of Engineering, Thapathali Campus. Immediately after completing the master’s degree program, he was involved as a consulting geotechnical engineer in different projects of bridges, buildings, power transmission towers, power sub-stations, hydropower projects, dams, landslides, airports, etc. He was also involved in field works of LRIP, Save the Children, and USAID funded projects, especially after the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. At present, he runs his own geotechnical engineering consulting firm called “Clay Engineering” and heads the firm as its Managing Director. Er. Neupane is a Life member of Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS), a Life Member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), and a registered engineer of Nepal Engineering Council (NEC).
6. Er. Yogendra Thapa (Geotechnical Engineer, NEA Engineering Company Ltd.) (2018.1-2022.5)

Er. Thapa has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (2009) from Advanced College of Engineering and Management, and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering (2017) from Tribhuvan University (Institute of Engineering,  Pulchowk Campus). He is currently working as a Geotechnical/Tunnel  Engineer at NEA Engineering Company Limited.  He also has professional experience of working in the field of geotechnical investigation, planning, and geotechnical report preparation. He is a member of Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA), Nepal Geotechnical Society (NGS), and also a registered engineer of the Government of Nepal.
